THE 1ST INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON DEMOCRACY AND SOCIAL TRANSFORMATION (ICON-DEMOST) “HUMANITY AND THE CHANGING OF SOCIAL AND POLITICAL LANDSCAPE IN POST COVID-19 WORLD”

A. THEME
“HUMANITY AND THE CHANGING OF SOCIAL AND POLITICAL LANDSCAPE IN POST COVID-19 WORLD”

B. BACKGROUND

The Covid-19 is considered among global events that have caused major changes to the world since the end of the second world war. By the end of 2020, this virus has infected more than 60 million people globally and has killed 1.5 million of them. The  virus has led to fundamental changes in various areas such as health, social, economic, and political as well as posing new challenges for the future of global humanity.

In the health sector, the pandemic has uncovered the real capacity of the Health system of a country. Some countries are overwhelmed because the capacity of their health services is smaller than the number of patients that need to be treated. This happened not only in southern countries but also in developed countries in the north. This situation forces various countries to make adjustments and reform their health systems.

The Covid-19 has slowed down the global economy. The social distancing and mobility restriction policy has made global economic activities decrease. Tourism is among the economic sectors that were hit by the pandemic. Likewise, the industrial sector has also experienced a similar situation. Consequently, several companies implemented layoff policies which further weakened the economic situation due to the decline in consumer buying power.

The pandemic outbreak has also affected the global political order and political processes in various parts of the world. A government policy in dealing with the pandemic has a significant effect on public satisfaction and the popularity of the government. The failure of Donald Trump in the United States General Election is an indication of the decline of Trump's electability due to his ineffective policies for COVID 19. The pandemic has also been used to overthrow a democratically elected government. As happened in Myanmar. The military took over the power of the democratically elected Aung San Suu Kyi. Violations of the Health protocol during the pandemic are among the reasons used by the military to arrest this Myanmar democracy figure.

In the field of religion, the outbreak has changed religious rituals and traditions which never been imagined before. This situation forces religious institutions to adapt dan reformulate their teachings to ensure the relevance of religions in a pandemic situation. Communal orientation in religious practices has changed to an individual orientation due to social distancing policies and the emergence of clusters of infection in places of worship.

From a gender lens, the COVID 19 has impacted men and women differently. Some data show that the working from the home policy has made women and girls bear unequal pandemic burdens compare to men and boys. Women are also prone to experience domestic violence as indicated by the increase of gender-based violence cases worldwide. But the COVID-19 has also revealed that female leaders showing outstanding success compared to male leaders in handling the transmission of the corona virus, as indicated by the Prime Minister of New Zealand, the President of Taiwan, and the German Chancellor.

Based on the above background, the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences UIN Walisongo Semarang Indonesia is organizing an international conference to create a space for academic conversation as an effort to generate ideas for the future of humanity after the COVID-19. The International conference also aims to develop scientific frameworks, enhance institutional capacities, and foster academic international cooperation.
