Moderate Islam: Promoting Tolerance And Harmony In the Digital Era

Background
The Faculty of Da’wah and Communication (FDC) is the oldest faculty in the State Islamic University of Walisongo. The faculty is a home to five programs, including Islamic Guidance and Counseling, Islamic Communication and Broadcasting, Da’wah Management, and Hajj and Umrah Management. With different study fields, FDC has become a safe place for the investigation and development of a wide range of knowledge. All of the topics under discussion are important for the development of Islam in Indonesia. Thus, it is necessary for the faculty to build more connections to the world in relation to knowledge by holding an international conference as the place to discuss and expand the already established scientific fields.
This conference will discuss issues in under da’wah and communication with the theme of Moderate Islam explored from various perspectives and approaches: economy, politics, law, social, and culture, from both social and natural science. This conference invites presenters and speakers from various knowledge background to gain novel model and ideas of moderate islam that is sustainable and confirming to the current world.
The topic that should be the main focus as the umbrella for different scope of research under Da’wah and Communication is Moderate Islam. KH. Ma’aruf Amin, vice president of Indonesia, points out that Moderate Islam should be a dynamic and flexible representation of Islam (2019). Moderate Islam presents the teaching of Islam that fits into the Indonesian context without being necessarily strict or too permissive. The terminology arises as a result of religious turmoil in Indonesia that arises because of the diverse nature of the country. In addition, the industrial revolution 4.0 created more complications in the world of Islam than before. More novel ideas of investigation have yet to be explored. Thus, the urgency of debate on the issue of Moderate Islam, especially in relation to the industrial revolution 4.0, is relevant.
It is now necessary to create a place for experts and researchers to discuss the topic of Moderate Islam in order to solve related problems. The Faculty of Da’wah and Communication of UIN Walisongo aims to become a research-based campus in 2038. In order to achieve this goal, FDC has developed a number of strategies that would be implemented in various events that support the development of a research culture. The International Conference, which is every two years scheduled, is one of the main events in the FDC. In 2019, the Biennial Conference on Da’wah and Communication II "Revitalisasi Gerakan Dakwah Islam di Era Disrupsi: Menuju Gerakan Dakwah Humanis-Transformatif Berbasis Local Wisdom" will be held. The event was so successful that a similar event was scheduled to take place in 2020, but the Covid-19 pandemic forced the event to be postponed until the following year, 2021. As the year of 2021 comes and the event will continue, it is important to highlight the terms of reference that are used for the new concept of the FDC conference.
